Do Electric Cars Have Transmissions?

Learning about the ins and outs of electric cars like the Jeep Wrangler 4xe? Many Spanaway drivers are, especially as electric vehicles increase in popularity. As you explore how electric vehicles function, you may find yourself wondering: “Do electric cars have transmissions?” They do, but they function differently than in a standard vehicle. Gears on Electric Cars

Unlike an internal combustion engine, cars with electric motors produce nearly instantaneous torque. Because of this, there’s no need to “rev” the engine to make peak power during your DuPont drives. So, what does that mean for gears on electric cars? Basically, it translates to the elimination of most gears. In fact, most EVs have a single-speed transmission. This allows drivers access to all the power in their vehicle as soon as they press down on the accelerator pedal.

Here’s how an electric vehicle powertrain works:

  1. The battery sends electricity to the motor when you step on the accelerator.
  2. The energized motor spins, which in turn spins the gearbox (what most drivers refer to when talking about an electric car transmission).
  3. As both elements spin, your vehicle begins to move. Some electric motors can rotate up to 20,000 rpm. By contrast, most internal combustion engines on a vehicle only rotate up to 7,000 rpm.
  4. When you switch to reverse, the electric motor reverses the direction of its spinning. In a standard vehicle, there is a separate gear within the transmission that puts the vehicle in reverse.

Electric Car Transmission Maintenance

Drivers from Puyallup and beyond praise electric vehicles for the limited maintenance they require. No internal combustion engine means no engine oil to worry about, thus eliminating the need for oil changes. Does an electric car transmission require maintenance, then? The answer is yes. Some electric vehicles have transmission fluid, which will need to be flushed and replaced at recommended intervals, for instance. Not all electric cars have transmission fluid though, so consult your owner’s manual for guidance.
