2020 RAM 2500 Driving Backroads

If you’re a long-time auto aficionado, you may remember a time when the Dodge RAM pickup trucks were kings of the road. But over time, the two became two distinct brands with their own unique identities. So, when did Dodge and RAM split and why did it happen? Let’s go into the history of these two automotive giants, and find out what led to the rebranding.

Dodge and RAM Timeline

When Did Dodge and RAM Split?

The original Dodge brand started way back in 1900, and it wasn’t until 1914 that the Dodge RAM pickups debuted. So while RAM was once the name of Dodge’s light-duty pickup trucks, over time, the two separated into distinctive lineups. Chysler bought Dodge in 1981, which led to a restructuring of the most popular models. This meant that Dodge retained its cars, SUVs, and minivans – while the RAM truck lineup eventually became its own brand completely in 2009.

What Happened to Dodge RAM Trucks?

Why Did Dodge and RAM Split?

So, why did Chrysler break up these two brands? This process allowed for more focused development of new models. Dodge created the Dodge Challenger to compete with the Chevy Corvette sports car, while the RAM lineup could focus on creating more powerful engines and more resilient builds for Spanaway jobs. By splitting the two brands up, each could become more specialized and innovative.

Who Owns RAM?

If you have a used RAM that dates before 2009, you might still have the “Dodge RAM” emblem. The company dropped the “Dodge” in 2009, so all trucks made from this date forward were simply “RAM trucks”. And though Dodge and RAM are still part of the same company, the trucks are labeled solely as RAM.
